Oh, you should have been in St. George this weekend!

Maple Mountain’s Varsity and JV tennis teams headed to St. George to play in the Duel in the Desert Tournaments. After match play on Day One, our JV and Varsity teams set the tone by establishing a 21 of 22 cumulative match winning streak. Junior Varsity players ended up playing each other on Day Two in the Doubles Finals with Collin Eaton/Justin Beary defeating teammates Braden George/Nick H. Taylor in the final for first and second place. Freshman Mckay Luu won 4 matches and fought hard in the finals losing to Park City in the singles championship taking home the Junior Varsity 2nd place medal.

The Varsity 14-team tournament in St. George Duel in the Desert was to prove out Golden Eagle Tennis. MMHS Boys Tennis Team is back even stronger than last year. MMHS first match of the season lined up with St. George home court advantage with Pine View. Maple Mountain boys made themselves right at home with a 5-0 win. Jordan Beetdiggers were the next team on the agenda and fell to MMHS losing to Maple Mountain 5-0 as well.

On Day 2 of tournament play, all of us knew it would be hair raising going into the semi finals against Dixie High School but MMHS walked out on the courts with victory in their hearts and minds and walked off with victory on the books 4-1 win--with Chris Wiscombe's strongest win of his career knocking off Dixie's number one, Brock Allred 2010 Region Champion and Finalist at last year's Tri Region. Chris beat him in a tiebreaker in the 3rd set with all the coaches chewing their fingernails off. That win advanced us to the finals against all-time great tennis school Park City High.

The Miners have proven in the past to be an exceptional tennis team winning multiple State Championships. Our Golden Eagles were undaunted. Our 1st Singles lost and came off the court first. Second Singles was down 2-5 in the first set. Second doubles team, Trevor Morey/Blaine Blonquist, undefeated throughout the tourney won their match in straight sets, putting the team score at one a piece. Our first Doubles team, Nick Taylor/Kevin Rose, also undefeated in the tourney walked off with a 3 set win. Third singles Ryan Porter who had been undefeated going into the finals played a grueling 3 set match and lost in the third. Score was now 2-2. The fate of the team match and the whole Duel in the Desert Tourney rested on our 2nd Singles player.

Calder Groberg was down 2-5 in the first set and was playing a State Champion level opponent. Calder fought back in the first to 6-6 and then lost the set in a tiebreak. Coach Whiting walked out on the court and asked Calder how he felt, "Strong Coach, I can play all day today and he is tired." Calder continued to put out on the court with precision volleys and explosive serving. Calder won the second set and the match went into the third and deciding set. Coach Whiting again walked out to get a feel for what his strategy would be and Calder asked how the rest of our team had done. "It is 2-2 not to put any pressure on you!" Calder smiled and said, "Good", I'm going to beat this kid.

Calder played out the final set cool as a cucumber taking risk on his serve hitting his second serve as hard or harder than his first. His energy and mental toughness paid off as he closed off a volley at the net and won the match. Coach Whiting had to turn his head so the team wouldn't see the tears in his eyes as he hugged Calder and turned to see the whole team running out on the court with a humongous team trophy to hand to Calder! Final Score MMHS 3 Park City 2.

A better start for the Golden Eagles is not possible. Keep your eye on this team!

Over 100 Participate in MMHS Free Tennis Clinic Saturday 22 May!

Snow was falling at 6:30 AM as I stood on the MMHS Tennis Courts Saturday, but the sun soon peeked through the clouds and burned off snow and water; and at the 10 AM appointed hour over 100 hundred tennis students from all over Utah County were ready to stroke the ball out on the MMHS Tennis Courts at the first annual FREE Tennis Clinic!

To be precise their were 104 students, who ran and played hard for 2 hours--soaking up free instruction from top tennis professionals and players.

Special thanks to ATP Touring Tennis Professional, Dann Battistone, for his surprise appearance and instruction! Also thanks to Maple Mountain High School Tennis Players for giving back to our community by promoting, hosting and instructing the day all gratis!

Maple Mountain tennis has clear goals

Sophomore Chris Wiscombe sums up the attitude of a first-year men's tennis team at first-year school Maple Mountain.
"Our team is good, but very young," Wiscombe said. "Our players are smart. When we get a little older and more experienced -- watch out."
Coach Paul Whiting knows the chances of a school winning a state title in its first year are a long shot, but Whiting said that this year, his team has a larger purpose.
"We have a function and an objective on our team and they are different. The function of our team is to turn boys into men and the objective is to win," Whiting said. "It's OK if we don't win as long as the function is met -- that's what's most important to us. If we have both, we will win."

The Golden Eagles have a 3-0 record and they are counting on that to help them proceed through the rest of region play. But there is stiff competition ahead of them from tennis juggernaut Timpview and Whiting said although his boys are capable of taking their eighth consecutive 4A title, most of their players don't have the experience on the court to be a real threat.
Wiscombe is the No. 1 singles player for Maple Mountain and is one of their best chances for state placement. Wiscombe and his two-handled racket went 6-3, 6-1 against Payson. His talent on the court is one reason his team is doing well and Whiting hopes that Wiscombe can peak at the right time at the state tournament.
Wiscombe said that his goal as he steps onto the court is to have a better mental game than his opponent. If he can do that, he usually wins.
Wiscombe said he's looking forward to testing that theory against Timpview's John Pierce. He hasn't played a match against him this season yet, but Wiscombe said he is feeling confident.
One surprising player for the Golden Eagles has been senior Jake Guymon, who didn't make the top seven in tryouts and was put on the JV team. During a tournament in St. George, Guymon stepped in for an injured Nick Taylor, who sprained his ankle, and has been undefeated since, winning the last five matches in a row.

"Jake has been a nice surprise for us," Whiting said. "In the last eight matches he's only dropped one set to Payson. He's one of the most vocal supporters of our team and we wouldn't be where we are with out him."
The state tournament is several weeks away and for now, the Golden Eagles are focusing on what's important -- the match they are playing next. They will face Spanish Fork today. Wiscombe said he's excited to test his skills against the Dons' Trevor West.
"I'm going to focus on winning, go in mentally strong and play consistent," Wiscombe said. "That's all I can do."

Great MMHS boys tennis win against Payson!

MMHS number one singles Chris Wiscombe came ready to play and quickly won 6-3, 6-1
Rustin Porter our second singles won 6-3, 6-0 (every match this year he has a 6-0 set!
Hunter Hullinger played great--and even fought back to have a match point falling short 4-6, 6-3, and 5-7 good job Hunter!

Our number one doubles (Bryan Brothers Chest Bump kings) Jake Guymon and Jordon Argyle battled best out of three sets to win 6-4, 5-7, 6-4

Second doubles Braden George and Ben Morey as usual finished before anyone else and came off the court with 6-2, 6-0 victory.

We now have a perfect Varsity region record of 3 wins and 0 losses. Great Job Boys!

Our windscreens blew off the courts while we played just to give you an idea of how the Varsity boys stormed over their opponents today!

At number 1 singles, once again Chris Wiscombe dominated his match winning 6-1, 6-0, taking his High School record to 5 wins of 7 matches (to include having played two 5A schools) Chris is mentally tough and patient which is why he plays number one on this extraordinary team!

Rustin Porter displays incredible self discipline and concentration on the court…does he get it from you Art (his Dad)? I love watching this kid play tennis. He hits to the corners as well as any college player I have seen...explaining why he won 6-1-6-2...losing a total of 3 games out of his last 48!

Hunter Hullinger played a descent first set and then after Dad’s advice (Coach John Hullinger—former BYU tennis player) turned on turbo charge and won 6-0. He continues to play the net well and displayed excellent self discipline in setting up his shots for winners. At number 3 singles he breezed past his opponent 6-3, 6-0.

First Doubles team Jake Guymon and Jordan Argyle are at an unprecedented 7-0 record and again won today 6-0, 6-4. Slavens took stats and showed me 1 total unforced error in the first set! These State Champion hopefuls have yet to lose a set!

Second Doubles team Braden George and Trevor Morey—hmmm….how did Salem Coach Steve Philerup say it?...”your second doubles team is superb with their serve and volley game.” They rushed the net on practically every point and did not allow opponents to even get into the match. They won their match 6-1, 7-5

Well it is past midnight and I am forgetting some of the excellent play from Blaine Blonquist, Cameron Anderson, David Smith (all who won easily) and dang it I will remember in the morning who else I am forgetting…until then:

Congratulations Junior Varsity who did not lose a match winning 5-0

JV 1 singles - Calder Groberg (possibly the strongest athlete on the team) Ripped his serves in today!

JV 2 singles - Matt Chandler --The steady and perfect form freshman won easily 8-1

JV 3 singles - Nate Hawks --didn't patty cake today and proved it with an 8-2 victory!

JV 1 doubs - Spilker/Griffin-- took their team to task and were all over the net...try to lob 6-4 Tyson Griffin in the wind!

JV 2 doubs - Slavens/Beary--net play extraordinaire! Justin Beary hit a backhand volley that made my mouth water! Justin Slavens thought he was back home in Kansas winds today but he had Oz on his side with almost magical play.

Opening Region Match Perfect Start with Perfect Score: 5-0 Straight Set Sweep over Springville.

Thursday MMHS Tennis Prep of the Week, Rustin Porter, came off with the first Varsity victory over Springville. Rustin's phenomenal concentration on the court led him to yet another perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at 2nd singles. This is the 3rd High School Match in a row that Rustin has won 6-0, 6-0.

At number 1 singles, Chris Wiscombe dominated his match winning 6-1, 6-2 taking his High School record to 4 wins of 6 matches (to include having played two 5A schools)

Hunter Hullinger is shaking off the winter rust and displayed excellent self discipline in setting up his shots for winners. At number 3 singles he breezed past his opponent 6-1, 6-1.

First Doubles team Jake Guymon and Jordan Argyle won 6-3, 6-3, and continue their perfect doubles play with an unbelievable season record of 6 wins and no losses--They have not even lost a set.

Second Doubles team Braden George and Trevor Morey played exceptional tennis. They rushed the net on practically every point and did not allow opponents to even get into the match. They won their match 6-2, 6-2.

The superb Varsity line up for MMHS is Chris Wiscombe at number 1 singles (he wiped me out in a set today).

Rustin Porter is a very tough number 2 singles--having won both of his last 2 matches in St. George 6-0, 6-0. Hunter Hullinger a very strong number 3 singles is a strong hopeful for region championship as well as a State Championship.
With Nick W. Taylor out with an ankle injury and Blaine Blonquist gone with School Choir tomorrow's doubles teams are still unbelievably strong:

At Varsity first doubles Jordan Argyle (undefeated in 5 matches in St. George) playing with Team Captain Jake Guymon (keep an eye on these top doubles players! Second Doubles team is Braden George (who won 4 of 5 matches in St. G) and partner Trevor Morey (also 4 wins of 5 matches in St. G)!
In addition we also have JV and JJV matches scheduled for some exciting matches!

MMHS Powerhouse in Duel in the Desert Season Opener!

First Ever Maple Mountain High School MMHS Boys Tennis Teams kickoff with phenomenal opener!

The MMHS boys Varsity defeated top teams this weekend both 4A and 5A schools including Jordan, Wasatch, Ben Lomond and Snow Canyon. MMHS defeated Jordan 5-0, Ben Lomond 5-0, Snow Canyon 5-0, and Wasatch 3-2. With the exception of Wasatch, MMHS did not lose a set to any of these teams! MMHS dropped only one match to 5A Hunter High School.

Varsity lineup for MMHS at the tournament was Chris Wiscombe, Rustin Porter, Braden George, at first, second and third singles respectively—all of whom were undefeated without dropping a set in the semi and final matches on Saturday. First Doubles team, Nick W. Taylor and Jordan Argyle, played flawlessly winning all 5 matches at the Tournament and lost a total of only 5 games. Second Doubles team, Blaine Blonquist and Tyson Griffin also went undefeated in the Semi Finals and Finals on Saturday.

MMHS Junior Varsity placed 2nd overall with Jake Guymon and Justin Slavens who were undefeated through the whole tournament and played MMHS other doubles team in the championship final, Nick H. Taylor and Trevor Morey. Calder Groberg, Matt Chandler, and Justin Beary, and Nate Hawks also played very good tennis and rounded out the JV Finalist team. This excellent team is Coached by Coach Steve Blonquist of Mapleton, Coach Adam Folkman of Spanish Fork and Coach Paul Whiting of Mapleton.

TENNIS TRYOUTS THIS MONDAY

Maple Mountain High School tennis begins March 1, 2010. 3:00 pm meet at outdoor courts MMHS. Inclement weather meet in Team Room.

Unique to the MMHS Tennis Team this year is the opportunity for all who tryout to get to play.

THIS MONDAY! March 1 Starts Tennis Season and Tryouts!

Anyone who wants to play on the MMHS Tennis Team who is eligible will be allowed to play. An input survey found at www.mmhstennis.blogspot.com must be filled out by athlete and parent before 1 March 2010. Junior High Freshmen are also encouraged to tryout and will be allowed to play on the team if they make the top 14 positions. If they do not make the top 14 they will play on the Mapleton or Diamond Fork Junior High teams to enjoy more match play. (Jr. High team season starts after High School tryouts on March 10th, so the opportunity for Freshmen to play on Jr. High team will still be available)

Tryouts will be held to select Varsity and Junior Varsity Teams. Seven players: 1,2,3 Singles and 1,2 Doubles constitute the Varsity team. Also seven players: 1,2,3 Singles and 1,2 Doubles constitute the Junior Varsity Team. Additional players will be allowed to be on the team; practice with the team as well as travel to our Uintah match as well as play in home matches when opponents have sufficient players to play.

BYU is 9-1 this season with a national ranking in the top 50; a very fun team to watch!

This weekend BYU has two home matches. The first is against San Francisco, Friday @ 5:30 pm.

The second is a big regional rivalry match against Greg Patton's #29 Boise State, Saturday @ 5:30 pm.
BYU provides free pizza, prizes, Cosmo, and great tennis this weekend. I hope to see you there!

Wrestling Cousins from Utah—Doman and Whiting—win Oregon District Championships

Saturday 20 February—Union, Oregon—

Mapleton Youth, Lewis Whiting, wins the Oregon 1A and 2A District Wrestling Championship pinning each of his opponents without giving up a single point. Whiting’s cousin, David Doman a former BYU wrestler coached the Crane Union High School team to a 3rd consecutive district championship.

Crane Oregon High School Coach, David Doman, coaches his cousin, Lewis Whiting, in the winning style of Olympians Mark and Dave Shultz. Between them, the Schultz brothers won more NCAA, World, and Olympic titles than any American brother combination in history. Doman says that he still teaches his boys what he learned years ago from Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Shultz. Doman wrestled for Mark Shultz at BYU the last and final year of the Brigham Young University wrestling program.

Warms: Lower extremities (glutes, calves, hamstrings, and quadriceps)
(1) Step forward with your left leg. Bending at your knee and hip, lower your body until your right knee almost touches the ground. Keep your back straight and your left knee behind your toes.
(2) Push off your right leg to stand up, then step forward with it.
(3) Lower your body so your left knee almost touches the ground. Continue alternating legs 10 times on each side.

LEG KICK
Warms: Trunk, hips, and lower extremities
(1) Standing on your left leg and keeping your spine in line, kick your right leg, which should remain straight, forward to about hip height.
(2) Let your leg swing back behind your body. Continue to kick your leg in this pendulous motion 10 times each way, then switch legs.

ARM CIRCLES
Warms: Shoulders and arm muscles
(1) Start with both arms straight overhead.
(2) Circle them down behind you,
(3) around to the front, and back up to the starting position. Do 10 circles, then switch directions so your arms go forward and down, then back and up.

Don't Forget to Fuel Up

Getting the most out of your workout can depend on what you put in your body.

DRINK UP: Dehydration makes you tire faster, which can cause you to cut your workout short. Within two hours of working out, drink 14–20 ounces of water and bring some with you to the gym.

CARBO-LOAD: Eat a snack with carbs and salt before you hit the gym. The WTA’s Kathleen Stroia recommends salted pretzels. The carbs keep you going and the salt helps you retain water.

POST-EXERCISE PROVISIONS: “Thirty minutes post-workout is critical” to recovery, Stroia says. To refuel, eat a snack that has a 3-1 carb-protein ratio. Also, weigh yourself before and after a workout. The WTA recommends you drink 20–24 ounces of water for every pound you’ve lost to rehydrate.

I am pleased to announce MMHS First Ever and newly appointed MMHS Men's Tennis Club President. Jake Guyman has willing accepted the multitude of responsibilites as shown below and I am certain he would love to hear from you on where you can and will volunteer to help!

As President of the Men's Tennis Club I see that your responsibilities might include:

1) Ensure all who want to play tennis this year 9th - 12th grades are invited and feel welcome to join and participate between now and 1 March (Season start)

2) Establish rules of personal integrity (maybe Sat morning we could watch "Forever Strong" in the Team room or at my house)

3) Organize a committee that can: Plan and execute a monthly Tennis Night with professional motivational speaker, (I have several folks we can invite--even possibly Jim Fannin who has coached the top 10 players in the world!) Larry Hall (BYU's former coach--Dave Boyack's friend) etc.

4) Ensure everyone has schedule of USTA tournaments and is aware of all tournament opportunities.

5) Take initiative to ensure that the Tennis Club is the most efficient and fun organization at MMHS!

Whew! Do you think Jake still wants to do it? I have informed Jake that he can pick and choose from the above and delegate any or all tasks to a VP or Committee chair person; by vote or appointment.

The reason I invited Jake to take this on is not only because he is a Senior who will be outstanding on the team this year, but also and most importantly because the boys and I all respect him. Jake Guyman is an outstanding natural leader--he proved that through the MMHS Summer Tennis Camps. He will take this Club to great heights and tons of fun!

1. Courts may be reserved for MMHS Golden Eagles Tennis teams and programs.
2. No street shoes are allowed on courts. Only tennis shoes may be worn.
3. 1 hour time limit for singles; 1 1/2 hour limit for doubles when someone is awaiting a court.
4. All tennis court rules, regulations and courtesies shall be observed.
5. Tennis courts are to be used for tennis only. No bicycles, skates, skateboards, in-line skates, hockey or other activities permitted.

How do I put this upcoming BATTISTONE BATTLEZONE TENNIS MATCH into perspective?

Twenty years ago I directed activities for a tennis club. We thought it a great idea to hold an exhibition match in the Sacramento California King Dome. We selected two of the World’s best: Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe. Our one day cost for the match; McEnroe $75,000 and Lendl $50,000. I kid you not the cost twenty years ago back in the day when minimum wage was $3.25 an hour our club paid out $125,000 to two players for an exhibition tennis match that the public could pay $40 a ticket to watch from the nose bleed section!

Brian and Dann Battistone are two of the best players in the World who have won multiple money tournaments. In an effort to promote and build our new Maple Mountain High School Tennis Team and our tennis community these ATP Tennis Professionals are volunteering to play this match for FREE. They are even paying their own way to fly out here between tournament play!

WE hope to see you there with all of your friends to sign up for MMHS Tennis Camp #3. After the match a Press Conference will be held and photo signing and autographs will be made available to all Camp Student’s past, present and future this summer. Feel free to bring your rackets, hats, balls or any item you want signed!

The rain was pouring down early in the day Thursday when MMHS Athletic Director, David Boyack, asked me if we were still going to try to pull off having the party. I said "Sure we are", but I didn't think over 50 of you would still come. Wow! Did I ever underestimate your commitment!

I could not believe the support on such a rainy day! One Hundred and Sixty of you came to join in! (That is the kind of turn-out we hope to have at our upcoming School Matches--Girls in the fall, and Boys in the Spring)

Jared Hair and Calder Groberg even got the courts squeegeed off so we could play the ABC league later in the evening—now that is dedication to tennis!

Thank you all so much for coming.

An especial thanks to our awesome custodian Monte for helping us set up and take down without even being asked.

Please also remember to thank Coach Laura Decker for picking up and planning all of the food! (and my dear wife Sherri for hustling back for more burgers and dogs when we ran out!) Thanks Art Porter and Coach Steve Blonquist for cooking!

Remember that for each student you refer to sign up reduces your camp fee accordingly: 3 student referrals allow you to play free for the following camp!

For those of you who make the tennis team this coming year, you will also be given a $ credit per referral toward the 2010 MMHS Professional Tournament Tour--either US OPEN or INDIAN WELLS. (The camps raise money to pay for the travel)

Welcome to the newest High School Tennis Team and the most exhilarating sport on the planet!

We are in for some serious fun this coming Spring and Summer as we prepare for Boys and Girls Tennis 2009-2010. And I kid you not when I say serious fun! Serious because MMHS Tennis is all about becoming the best that is in us. Fun because that naturally follows our pursuit of excellence.

My smart and sometimes smartalecky nephew, Andrew Whiting, pointed out that we currently are undefeated...and I must add that we will continue to be undefeated through 2009! And who knows maybe even 2010?

So I'll quit yacking here and throw out some ideas to see who wants to make MMHS Tennis the best in the Region, State and maybe even in the Nation...and if not the best then how about the most fun? We have 6 brand new post tension concrete tennis courts with a perfect latex surface. Our athletic director also promises to obtain windscreens along with a Lobster ball machine and several other court niceties that rival the best of any High School in the Nation.

Keep in mind that we will also obtain court time throughout the winter at the Spanish Fork Indoor tennis courts which is the most convenient and accommodating facility in the United States of America, and I am not exaggerating! Where else can you find a less expensive place to play indoor tennis all year round--anytime of the day or night on an excellent court surface--and with no light fees!

Any athlete, student, parent, brother, or sister, who would like to be a part of making the very first Maple Mountain High School Boys Tennis Team a success email me with your suggestions and your willingness to "serve"--pun intended!

We are looking for volunteers skilled in promotion, photography, newspaper reporting, tournament directing, video taping, transportation, poster publication, tournament scheduling--and someone who has traveled to the US OPEN at Flushing Meadows New York who can help us set a goal and figure out how to get our first MMHS team there to watch the big time players in person September 2010!

Our first step toward becoming the best team in the Nation is organizing our first-ever tennis staff!

Here are some staff positions that I propose. Feel free to email me other positions you might feel needful.

Staff Director to oversee Staff programs and organization

Videographer for Dartfish Tennis Analysis

Computer Analyst for Dartfish Video

Statistician for individual player analysis and development.

Scheduler for tournaments, schedule matches for players, organize US Open/Indian Wells trip

Tennis Ladder Director Blog update for team members to post match scores

Activities Chairman organize pep talks from Tennis Professionals like Dann Battistone, Jim Osborne, Larry Hall, etc. Team night/party night organizer

Promotion for flyers, posters, newsletters at Elementary schools, newspaper, radio, TV news

Sponsorship Babolat/Nike/USTA/Dominos (free pizza at every home match/open house)

Summer Camp Director for promotion, registration

Winter Tennis Director for off season play and preparation. BYU tennis match outings.

Each camp will promote fundamental tennis technique, etiquette, conditioning skills, and match strategy.

Each session runs two weeks Mon--Thurs for 45 minute trainings.

June 1st-11th, 15th-25th, 29th-July 9th,

July 13th-23rd, July 27th- Aug 6th,

Aug 10th-20th

Morning
-Lady’s class @ 7:00 a.m.

-Ages 4-10 @ 8:30 a.m.

-Ages 10-14 @ 9:15 a.m.

Afternoon

-High school beginners/intermediate (boys and girls) 2:30 p.m.
-High school advanced (boys and girls) 3:15 p.m.
-High School Ladder (competition) 4:30 p.m.
Ladder runs Tues/Thurs June 2-19 OR July 7-23

Evening
3X3 ABC Men's and Ladies' Tournament League- June league 3 weeks.

Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30 PM
6 teams of 3 A, B and C levels.
2 hrs/night, 2 days a week.
